Abstract

This research aims to analyze competitiveness and formulate a strategy for the sustainable development of cocoa farming in North Luwu Regency. The study uses a mixed methods approach with SWOT analysis to identify internal and external factors that affect the competitiveness of cocoa. Data was obtained from 50 cocoa farmer respondents through questionnaires and interviews. The results of the analysis showed that the strength factor obtained an average score of 34.25, weakness 29.25, odds 35.00, and threat 31.25. This condition puts cocoa farming businesses in a favorable position so that the Strength-Opportunity (S-O) strategy is a top priority. The main strengths come from farmers' experience, the use of superior seeds, and the availability of land resources, while the greatest opportunities come from the increasing demand for cocoa, support for government programs, and the potential for the development of processed products. However, cocoa farming businesses still face various obstacles, such as low implementation of post-harvest fermentation, limited technical knowledge of farmers, lack of counseling, high production input prices, as well as the threat of extreme weather and pest and disease attacks. The recommended development strategies include increasing the capacity of farmers through continuous counseling, institutional strengthening of farmer groups, developing post-harvest technology, diversifying processed cocoa products, and increasing market access and production facilities. The implementation of this strategy is expected to be able to increase the competitiveness, added value, and sustainability of cocoa farming businesses in North Luwu Regency.
