Abstract

The low level of active citizen participation in Tangerang City’s smart city ecosystem is the primary issue underlying this study, as reflected by the fact that out of 1,287,097 downloads of the Tangerang LIVE app, only 495,523 accounts are verified as active. This study aims to analyze residents’ perceptions of the potential of gamification and to formulate recommendations for effective gamification strategies to increase community engagement on the Tangerang LIVE platform. The method used is qualitative descriptive analysis through a literature review and an online questionnaire survey employing purposive sampling of 79 respondents, consisting of Tangerang City residents and individuals familiar with the Tangerang LIVE app. The results indicate that 82.3 percent of respondents had prior exposure to the concept of gamification, while 65.8 percent expressed willingness to use the app more actively if gamification features were implemented, with an average intention score of 3.87 and a potential score of 3.73 on a 5-point scale. This study concludes that gamification has real potential as a strategy to increase citizen participation, however its success requires a design oriented toward meaningful engagement, improved digital accessibility, and a government commitment to consistently responding to every citizen report.
